Winged eyeliner is a staple. A necessity. The ace in our bag of beauty looks, if you will. It’s effortless and an easy way to level up even the simplest of outfits. But, sadly for us and our shaky hands, it’s not the easiest thing to master.
Luckily for us, there are a bunch of winged eyeliner hacks out there to help us nail that ‘cool girl’ vibe without anyone knowing a thing.
1. Trace Along A Piece Of Tape
Before applying any kind of base of concealer to your face, place a small piece of sticky tape diagonally from the outer corner of your eye and up. Make sure the tape is positioned slightly lower than where you want your eyeliner to be, so when you trace along the top edge of the tape you get a perfectly positioned line.
To finish off your eyeliner, trace along the top edge of your eyelid and voila! Straight eyeliner thanks to a sneaky sticky tape hack. The best part? The tape will catch any smudges from shaky hands, so you won’t have to fix any rogue dots with concealer (see winged eyeliner hack number two below).
2. Conceal It
If you’d rather work free-hand then this next winged eyeliner hack will come in handy.
Once you’ve completed drawing in your eyeliner, grab an earbud or angled brush and dab it in a little concealer or makeup remover. Then use the brush to clean up any smudges or mistakes in your eyeliner. Simply trace along your eyeliner until it looks how you want it to. Make sure to dab some foundation on top to blend in the concealer and make everything look flawless.
Trust us, even the best eyeliner applicators out there have to use this trick from time to time.
3. Smoke It Out
Draw on your eyeliner free hand and then grab a small eyeshadow brush – with eyeshadow – and smudge out your eyeliner into your eyeshadow. This will create a more sultry, dramatic look and works wonders for hiding any unevenness in your eyeliner line. And, you’ll look like a boss – win win.
4. Prime, Prime, Prime
If you want to take your eyeliner look to the next level, why not trace along your eyelid? Bold, we know.
One thing you need to know if you’re going to attempt this ‘floating eyeliner’ look is that priming is everything. Make sure you prime your eyelid so it’s as smooth as possible and get tracing. Simply extend the wing of your eyeliner and trace along the upper crease of your eyelid and down into your inner corner. The final look is pretty boss bitch:
Pro tip: priming is also a good way to make your eyeshadow really pop. The lighter the colour of your prime or base coat, the more vibrant your eyeshadow appears.
