It was just before Christmas in 2003 when a car struck the Sydney daycare of two-year-old Sophie Delezio.

There isn’t an Australian out there who doesn’t remember this awful accident – in which Sophie suffered third-degree burns to 85 per cent of her body – nor the second car accident she was involved in May 2006. Not even three years after the first accident which nearly killed her, Sophie was hit by another car at a pedestrian crossing and thrown 20 meters, suffering a heart attack.

Sophie survived both accidents with the help of talented and dedicated medical professionals but what is Sophie Delezio up to now?

Well, Sophie is now 19 and has never let the struggles of her early days stop her from living her life to the fullest.

Speaking with Woman’s Day, Sophie explained she didn’t see herself as “ ‘Sophie, the girl with no legs’” but as someone completely normal.

“I think of myself as Sophie the chatterbox, the socialite, the girl who loves a good hamburger and enjoys each day as much as she can,” she told the publication.

“Sophie is a very determined young woman,” her dad Ron told The Weekly last year before she popped off to study sociology and international relations abroad in London.

“She has had to be determined and strong all her life. After everything that she has endured in the past 15 years, her just being alive is a testament to how determined she really is.”

“She has had a plan to live overseas for at least a couple of years and she’s been quietly working toward that goal the entire time.”
