The Cupid’s bow – the curvy part of your upper lip – is a cute, quaint facial feature and the fact it’s named after the Greek God of love makes it all the cuter and all the quainter.

Accentuate it with a good lippy, pop a lil’ bit of highlighter on there when you’re doing your makeup and hey presto! Suddenly we’re cute and quaint too.

But – BUT – we are about to shatter all positive emotions you have towards your cupid’s bow, ‘cause the reason we all have one is actually terrifying. Like straight out of hell-level terrifying.

THE CUPID’S BOW IS WHERE OUR FACE ZIPS UP IN THE WOMB.

Read that again.

Zips.

Up.

In.

The.

Womb.

Screaming Homer Simpson GIF
yeah… NO.

According to Hank Green – our favourite account on TikTok, FYI – “When you were an embryo… there was a time before you had a face and there were different sections of stuff that would become your skin that all joined together.”

Terrifying. Continue.

“They all come together right here,” he says, pointedly to his Cupid’s bow like it’s the most normal thing in the world!!!!!

Reason you have a cupid's bow

This seam/zipper/formation line of hell – whatever you want to call it – is more obvious in dogs who have philtrums (the technical name for Cupid’s bows) that are straight lines.

Reason you have a cupid's bow

When our faces don’t “come all the way together during development”, that’s called a cleft palate. It’s when people have literal gaps in the formation of their face. Often, this can be fixed with surgery but it can be quite complex.

We won’t scare you with a picture of a cleft palate but if you’re feeling brave, you can check one out here
