While recorded rates of crime on Sydney’s public transportation system are relatively low, recent headlines about assaults and stealing have some commuters feeling edgy.
So which train stations have the most crime? That depends on how you measure it.
In a detailed study by the NSW Government, major stations like Central and Town Hall had the most crime by the number of incidents and North Sydney had the least.
1. Central: 151 incidents
2. Town Hall: 51 incidents
3. Blacktown: 48 incidents
4. Parramatta: 32 incidents
5. Strathfield: 31 incidents
6. Penrith: 30 incidents
7. Redfern: 30 incidents
8. Fairfield: 23 incidents
9. Liverpool: 23 incidents
10. Mount Druitt: 19 incidents
But when you compare the number of incidents to the number of passengers, the stats paint a very different picture.
Central Station may have the most incidents, but considering the station handles more than 44 million journeys a year, the rate is quite low.
By the number of crimes per 100,000 passenger interchanges, Narwee and Birrong are the suburban stations with the most incidents at 1.3 each.
Regionally, Waratah in suburban Newcastle and Warnervale on the central coast had the highest rates with 3.2 and 2.5 incidents per 100,000 passengers interchanges respectively.
